I drew this picture of B-Way while I was mourning. I poured my pain and sadness into it. I wanted to convey who B-Way was, his smile, his serious side. He was a beautiful person, and that’s what I wanted people to see. The clock is at 4:10 p.m., the time he died. The gears are the wheels of time that keep on turning. He is gone, and the closing of Stateville is a part of his legacy.

A pencil drawing of a man in a mortarboard shown in profile, surrounded by a clock, gears, roses, an angel statue and two smaller portraits, with the lettering “B-way,” “Michael Broadway,” “7-15-72” and “6-19-24.”

This drawing won second place for Best Illustration in the 2025 Stillwater Prison Journalism Awards (opens in a new tab).
