Behind the Canvas: In Loving Memory of Katrina Giles

By Juan Garnica

The idea for this drawing, “In Loving Memory of Katrina Giles,” was born as my peers and I were walking to chow hall. We wanted to magnify how far Katrina’s life could reach and show the beauty behind her story. She lives on forever through all of us who tell her story and keep her memory in our hearts. She will always be part of the NPEP community.

The drawing incorporates paraphrases of quotations from Northwestern professors Jennifer Lackey, Jen Baker, and Marquise Bey, and NPEP students Erika Ray, Tiffany Fassler, Diandra Samuels, Shawnette Green, and Jeanine Elam—friends, peers, and family of Katrina Giles.
