A Radiant Light, Gone Too Soon

On October 27, 2024, the NPEP community lost one of its own: NPEP student Katrina Giles. Her radiant presence has left an unforgettable mark. A member of the NPEP community for less than a year, Katrina’s grace, gratitude, and joy touched everyone she encountered.

“Katrina’s radiance was clear from the moment I met her,” reflects Professor Jen Baker. “Her smile and energy could turn the mood in a room.” Professor Marquis Bey adds, “She was beloved—kind, considerate, and thoughtful. Her writing and insights were extraordinary, and she will always be deeply missed.”

Even before officially joining NPEP, Katrina’s passion for learning shone when she worked alongside her friend and fellow student Tiffany Fassler. Once enrolled in NPEP, her work exhibited excellence and determination, even as her health declined.

On November 19, 2024, members of the Northwestern community gathered alongside the Logan cohort to honor Katrina’s memory. The memorial featured freewriting inspired by her playlist, including “One Day at a Time” by Corey Smith. Classmate Elbonie Burnside shared how Katrina’s joy touched everyone, while Katrina’s partner, Lakisha Woodard, spoke of her resilience and love for her “Look at Me” family. A moving contemporary dance to Andra Day’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” reflected Katrina’s spirit of strength and hope.

Katrina found peace and joy in gardening, a passion that will live on through a fundraiser to build a meditation garden at Logan in her honor. To support this effort, visit the GoFundMe website and search “Honoring Katrina: Building a Meditation Garden for Survivors.”

Katrina was a beautiful soul whose kindness and light will never be forgotten. The community is grateful that she was released from Logan and able to spend her last days at home surrounded by her family and friends.

Her legacy of love, resilience, and hope will continue to inspire the NPEP community and beyond.

Sincerely,

The Logan Community
