In Memory of Katrina, From Her NPEP Brothers

Our hearts weep, as we have suffered yet another loss of one of our beloved community members. It is not easy to deal with or overcome grief, especially when the grief comes with losing somebody that you love and who was close to you. Everybody deals with it in their own way and in their own time.

It is in this moment that we stand in solidarity with out sisters at Logan as they mourn the loss of Katrina. We want our sisters to know that they are not alone. We support our sisters. We are each other’s strength, in the good times and bad.

We share these thoughts and prayers. A community that’s united can never be divided.

Please stay strong. Be strong for each other. Celebrate Katrina in all that she meant to you—her joy, her peace, her smile, her grace. Carry her in all that you do, and trust that she will be an angel watching over you.

— Cincere Knowledge (Jamal Jones), Cohort 4

My thoughts and prayers go out to Katrina’s classmates, family, and friends. Stay strong! Stay together.

— Malik-Abdul Muhammad, Cohort 1

The most treasured gift we give the world is our presence. Having seen some of the sisters’ comments about who they knew you to be, you were a treasure. Blessings.

Condolences. Many of us understand and relate to such loss and the feelings it brings. All I can say is to be strong and don’t try to rush past these feelings. Don’t ignore them. Don’t pretend they aren’t there. Own them. Embrace them. And do all you can to remember the bright spots she brought to everyone she touched.

— Ian Valencia, Cohort 4

Hearing about Katrina’s passing was sad, but hearing about her character gave me joy. The impact she had on everyone around her during difficult times truly exemplified “agape.” I wish I could have met her, and one day I will. I send my love and condolences to the family and know that we are praying for you.

Although I never met Katrina personally, my heart still goes out to her and her family. One thing I recognize is that Katrina was a part of our community, and she will be sorely missed. Katrina’s brother, Tim, is a friend that I recently met during my stay at Stateville, and I pray for their family and the vacancy that is left behind due to Katrina’s loss. My heart goes out to all who are affected by this current tragedy.

— Chris Douglas, Cohort 3
